On April 30, 2019 at our 39th Annual Dan Benson Track & Field Invitational, the Memorial Plaque of Coach Dan Benson was unveiled.
Coach Dan Benson started teaching and coaching in the Wauwatosa School District in 1951. He served as an assistant track coach at the Wauwatosa High School until the opening of West in 1961. As an original staff member at West, Dan taught Biology, assisted in Football, and was the first Head Track Coach. He served as Head Coach from 1961-1986 when he retired from the District. During his years of coaching, the track teams from 1971 and 1981 were undefeated all the way up to the state meet. The 1962 team finished as the WIAA State Runner Up behind All-State performer Art Sanders. Coach Benson and his staff coached numerous individual conference and state champions, and were always known for competing with disciplined and schooled athletes.
Coach Benson founded the Dan Benson Track and Field Invitational in 1981; it was originally known as the Trojan Athletic Club Invitational.
On January 17, 2015, Coach Benson was inducted into the Wauwatosa West Athletic Hall of Fame.
Sadly, Coach Benson and his wife Joyce passed away earlier this year. However, their legacy will live on forever at Wauwatosa West and the Dan Benson Track & Field Invitational.
