-For Athletic Department Game Personnel and Participant Use-

The Wauwatosa School District is taking a proactive approach for all visitors and attendees as it relates to COVID-19. The District has identified the following interior and exterior safety guidelines to protect the health and wellbeing of those who enter onto our sites.

GENERAL GUIDELINES (for current risk level activities)

Daily Entry Health Questionnaire and Protocols:

  • All game personnel and participants must complete the online Check-in form prior to entering any building or coming to any outdoor athletic facility. This will help manage attendees in case of a positive case of COVID-19.
    • How to conduct these check ins?
      • Either a coach or athletic department employee could conduct the survey on a participant or game personnels’ behalf or;
      • A game personnel or participant could conduct the survey (check-in form and self-questionnaire) on their own.
        • Participants can use the linked instructions to add survey to their phone’s home screen
  • Complete self-check questions available on the check-in form and posted on the entrance to the building. Answers will not be collected to these questions.
  • Players, coaches and game personnel need to check their temperature at home before attending practices or games. 
    • If anyone has a temperature of 100.4F or above, they should not attend practices or games. 
      • Individuals with illness symptoms do not return to practice until:
        • They are free of fever (>100.3°F) AND respiratory symptoms (for example, cough, shortness of breath) for at least three days (72 hours) without the use of fever-reducing medicine; AND 
        • Ten days have passed since symptoms first appeared. 
    • Refer to the chart for guidance – Participant Flow Chart.

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Adults (Coaches, officials, sideline personnel, etc.)
    • All Adults must wear a face cloth cover or other covering over their nose and mouth
  • Student participants
    • All students must wear a face cloth cover or other covering over their nose and mouth during school-sponsored athletic gatherings.  Masks with holes or vents are not permitted.
      • Masks/cloth face coverings may be removed when athletes are engaged in strenuous activity.
      • Masks must be worn indoors while practicing or playing. Cloth masks are safe to use when exercising. Do not wear medical/surgical masks or N95 for exercising.
      • Masks/cloth face coverings must be worn when not engaging in activity, such as (but not limited to) supporting another athlete, sitting on the bench during contests, in the locker room and in the athletic training room.
  • Plastic shields covering the entire face (or attached to a helmet) shall not be allowed during contests.

Handwashing and Personal Hygiene:

  • Personal Hygiene
    • In addition to common expectations for hand washing after bathroom use and before eating, all participants must wash hands after touching frequently used items or surfaces.
    • Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds
    • While handwashing is most ideal, hand sanitizer is an acceptable substitute where time does not allow a visit to a handwashing station.
    • To the extent possible, participants must cover their coughs or sneezes with a tissue or use an elbow. Participants must utilize hand sanitizer or engage in hand washing after sneezing and/or coughing.
    • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
    • No pre-game and post-game handshakes/high-fives/fist bumps.
  • Non Personal hygiene
    • Hand sanitizer will be available at contests and practices
    • Balls, equipment and other frequently used items and surfaces will be wiped down at least daily and between uses when possible.

Social Distancing:

  • Inside spaces
    • Participants and event personnel will social distance while at the event.
    • Athletes should be in small groups (team) and separated from other groups by a wall, solid curtain or other impermeable barrier
    • Participants and event personnel should not engage in handshakes or other types of physical contact
  • Outdoor spaces
    • All outdoor spaces will maintain groups of 50 or less (unless approved by the health department) and practice social distancing of 6 feet apart when not engaged in athletic activities.
  • General
    • Workouts should be conducted in “pods” of students with the same 10 students working out together. There should be limited interaction or mixing of students between the pods. Smaller pods will be utilized for weight training.


  • Thorough cleaning will be done on a daily basis
  • Wipes and disinfectant will be provided for participants to wipe down equipment and machines after use
  • Air flow inside buildings will be monitored and appropriate filters will be utilized.

 Physical Activity and Equipment:

  • There will be limitations on the number of balls, equipment, etc. are used
  • There will be no shared athletic towels, clothing or shoes between students. 
    • All clothing/towels should be washed and cleaned immediately after workout 
  • No shared water bottles. Individuals should bring their own FILLED water bottles labeled with their name.  The athletic trainer or designee will be responsible for dispersing water from the water cooler.  If bottle filling stations are available, the student should utilize that when possible.
  • Athletes and coaches will wipe down any used equipment periodically throughout practice and after practice is completed.

Away Contests:

  • Transportation – Athletes will be required to wear a mask on the bus, sit one per row, they may be assigned a seat, may have a parental waiver signed, use of hand sanitizer on/off the bus, and leave the first row open behind the driver.  The bus driver will wipe down all seats after the team departs the bus.
    • Van use – Athletes will be required to wear a mask, distance seating as much as possible, use of hand sanitizer on/off the van, sit in the same spot to/from practice or meet, wipe down common touch points – seat belt, door handle.  Only the coach will touch items in the front console area including radio, A/C-heat buttons, etc.
  • Away teams are responsible for completing pre-screen checks prior to their departure from the school.
  • Athletes will be required to be dressed in game uniform prior to departure from East High School.  i.e exception, shoes, football helmets/shoulder pads, etc. 

Weight Room Training

Protocols in addition to previous listed guidelines specifically for any training workouts, inside or outside:

  • Masks or facial coverings should be worn unless physical activity prohibits the use of a facial covering.
  • Only groups of 12-15 students plus one coach are allowed per workout session. 
    • Individuals who wish to use the Tosa East Weight Room must complete the Check In Form prior to entering. 
    • Individuals who wish to use the Tosa West Weight Room must visit during appropriate hours listed here and follow all usage guidelines. 
  • Social distancing of 6 ft should be maintained between students, spotters must wear a mask.
  • Limitations on equipment to reduce cleaning needs. 
    • Each piece of equipment used will be wiped down after each individual use. 
  • Markings will be in place to guide movement and spacing while moving throughout the session from station to station.
  • If multiple groups are scheduled back to back, starting/ending, groups will enter and exit to eliminate cross traffic.
  • Last five minutes of the session should be used to ensure all equipment is wiped down.  (Knobs for adjustments, weights, standards, etc.) 
  • Dynamic warm ups will take place in the hallway or gym, using any marked areas for standing points.
