This game certainly looked like the first game played off the turf as both teams combined for 11 errors.
West jumped out to an early lead on an RBI double by Quinn Cepican in the top of the 2nd. They would add two more in the top of the 3rd. Will Cape led off with a double, stole 3rd, and scored on a throwing error. Jacob Gross followed with the teams first HR of the season, a towering fly ball that took advantage of the “Wrigley field winds” blowing out to left.
West would break things open in the 4th. 5 runs would score courtesy of walks, errors, a few hits and a hit by pitch.
With an 8-0 lead and Quinn Cepican dealing, there looked to be a chance for a 10 run rule. Falls however had other ideas. With strong relief pitching from Falls, the Trojans were kept off the board for the rest of the way while Falls slowly chipped away. An error kept the bottom of the 4th inning alive and an rbi single and a two run double cut the lead in half. All 4 runs were unearned. Cepican would battle through the 5th, finishing the day with 5 strong innings, no walks and 6 strikeouts.
Falls added a few runs in the 6th to set the stage for an exciting 7th inning. After back to back walks, Corey Suchy was called upon to try and earn a save. After Falls bunted runners over, Suchy induced a sacrifice fly and ended the game with a strikeout to secure the 8-7 win.
