West came back from a 3-0 deficit to knock off Marquette 4-3 in the first round of the state playoffs. It was the Trojans first playoff victory since 2013. Spencer Whitlock went the first 5 2/3 innings giving up just 3 runs to earn the win, and Mitch Fassbender worked the last 1 1/3 for the save. Trailing 3-0, the Trojans evened the score at 3-3 in the 5th on three consecutive singles by Will Cape, Whitlock, and Jonathan Baumler. In the West half of the 6th, Rece Cepican doubled with one out, and Fassbender delivered a base hit that scored courtesy runner Trevor Kuhl for what proved to be the winning run.
West faces crosstown rival Tosa East in the second round Thursday night at Breitlow Field.
